The use of sliding shoes made from the high-performance ceramic material silicon nitride has a decisive advantage in controllable water pumps in automotive manufacturing: optimized friction. In motor vehicles, this results in both reduced power consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. These sliding shoes are produced by FCT Ingenieurkeramik GmbH using a ceramic injection molding process (CIM).

“Motivated to the Hilt”

At Fakuma 2023, Leonhardt e.K. will be showcasing a 2-component injection molding technology – for high-performance ceramics.

The tool and mold making company Leonhardt e.K. is known for its high innovation potential. Together with the Institute for Manufacturing Technology of Ceramic Components (IFKB) at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, the company has now developed a 2-component injection molding technique that enables material-to-material connections between different ceramics. The prerequisite for this is to condition the ceramics with their different sintering behavior in such a way that they shrink synchronously during thermal treatment and form a strong bond. This requires finding precisely fitting sintering additives, precisely calculating and building the injection molding tool, and adapting the manufacturing technology.

The novel process makes it possible, for example, to bond a structural ceramic with high temperature resistance and an electrically conductive functional ceramic for applications in high-frequency surgery. At Fakuma 2023, visitors will be able to observe the injection molding of 2-component ceramic components live.
