fw mould tec GmbH, Micheldorf, Austria, has filed a patent application for a process that integrates insertion of gaskets and placement of flexible labels when producing pipe fittings. With this process, three production steps are combined into a single operation. The process (In-mold gasket) makes it possible to insert the gasket of a push-together part such as a fitting with only one mold opening motion. Previously, gaskets were always inserted either by hand or with the aid of an automatic insertion device. Moreover, this technique permits use of custom-designed sealing lips. Verifying material compatibility is essential in order to ensure adhesion of the gasket to the molded part.

Ever higher demands are made on drainage pipes for underground drainage in road construction and civil engineering. One reason for this are the change in weather conditions with extreme rainfall. In order to meet the growing demand for tunnel-shaped plastic drainage pipes, Unicor GmbH, Hassfurt, Germany, has developed new molds for its production facilities (corrugators) of types UC 250 and UC 315. The smooth pipe bottom of the tunnel-shaped drainage pipe guarantees a faster discharge of the water masses than single-wall pipes with circular corrugated profile.

The QuickSwitch System for inline dimension change at the press of a button is immediately available for the extrusion of polyolefin pipes in diameters up to 450 mm. The manufacturer is KraussMaffei Technologies GmbH, Munich, Germany. Core components of the line are a 36D-series single-screw extruder, the newly designed KM-3L RKW 75 QS pipe head, the suction cup and the calibration basket in KraussMaffei QuickSwitch design.

Profile Inspect, a line laser light section sensor from EVT Eye Vision Technology GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany, monitors dimensions and profile cross-sections in the production of profiles and pipes. It continuously captures the cross-sections of moving semi-finished goods, e.g. extruded profiles or other viscous materials. Integrated image processing software measures the geometry of the product while the instruction set ensures that all relevant dimensions, such as angles and radii, are shown and the tolerances monitored.

Solvay and Agru Sign Long-Term Supply Agreement for Use of Solef PVDF in High-Purity Semicon Water Piping Systems.

Solvay, a global manufacturer in high performance polymer and composite materials, has signed a multi-million euro agreement with long-term partner Agru, a company for engineered polymer applications, for the supply of high-purity Solef polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). With this multi-year contract, Agru secures the reliable supply of Solef PVDF for the manufacture of ultra-pure water piping systems used in the growing semiconductor industry.

By building on Solvay’s high-purity resins and Agru’s advanced engineering providing, our co-located teams have been able to jointly develop new applications in one of their key growth market, the semiconductors industry and significantly increase the cleanliness of piping systems,” says Peter Browning President of Solvay’s Specialty Polymers Global Business Unit. “This agreement further reinforces the bond between our companies, and we look forward to continuing to grow our partnership with Agru.”

As an industry benchmark thermoplastic fluoropolymers, Solvay’s Solef PVDF resins are utilized extensively in the semiconductor industry for pipes, tubing and fittings used in water piping systems due to their exceptional purity. Unlike many other plastics, they do not require the use of stabilizers, plasticizers, lubricants or flame-retardant additives. Thanks to their chemical inertness and to the virtual absence of released contaminants, natural Solef PVDF grades are ideal for components in distribution systems or ultra-pure water and other chemically pure fluids used in the semiconductor industry.
